Marvel’s Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan, Sticks Up For Ant-Man

I honestly can’t remember if Bucky Barnes and Scott Lang are on good terms in the comics.

It seems like they would be, but I can’t recall any recent stories in which they interacted. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though, no worries: the Winter Soldier has Ant-Man’s back.

To be more precise, Sebastian Stan, who plays Barnes in the MCU films, thinks Ant-Man is just fine. The reason this is even a thing is that the actor heard what Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director said recently about the iconic nature of DC’s heroes versus some of the Marvel B-listers, which made him speak up in defense of those same characters in an interview with Collider.

"Yeah, I’m sitting here and I’m listening to you and I’m thinking, “Do I want to fire some shots at DC right now, at Zack Snyder?” I read some of those comments where he said something about Batman and Superman, I can’t remember where I read that, somewhere… Something about, “It’s not going to be your flavor-of-the-week Ant-Man.” And I was like, “Oh thanks, Zack. That’s great. Way to do something original.” But I would say we’re still making something very original in our own way. I mean, the Russos are coming in and taking something people are used to and they’re shaping it up and changing it in a very different way. They’re not trying to mimic a better Christopher Nolan movie or something like that."

As Collider’s Dave Trumbore points out, Snyder’s comments weren’t necessarily a slam against Ant-Man specifically, but more a commentary on how the big guns of the DC pantheon are more a part of modern mythology and are being treated that way on film. It’s a different approach from the one Marvel takes, and it very well could be the right one. We just won’t know for sure until Batman v Superman comes out next year.

Still, as tiresome as it can be when fans make too much of the “Marvel vs. DC” debate, it’s a bit more fun when people involved in the actual movies play up the rivalry. I don’t think this will turn into an ongoing thing, but it’s great when both companies are confident in what they’re doing.
