On last week’s “Rise of the Villains: Knock, Knock” episode of Fox’s Gotham, we saw Jerome take a leadership role with the newly formed Maniax — a gang composed of escaped Arkham inmates who are secretly funded by Theo Galavan. It seems that this week, Jerome fully blossoms — sans make-up — into Batman’s future arch-nemesis.
Readers of Bam Smack Pow probably know my issues with introducing any sort of background story for the Joker. Then again, recently, there’s been a revived debate as to whether Jerome will actually be the Joker. The producers of Gotham have stated that Jerome is the future Clown Prince of Crime, so to me, this debate seems like a moot point.
Gotham‘s promotional engine has touted this episode to be a “can’t miss” installment. I’m not really sure how I feel about that as every episode has taken us further and further from Batman’s myth. And every episode has also used some cheap gimmicks — over-the-top violence (I’m not offended by it, but it’s just boring) and “shocking” revelations — to keep audiences tuned in. We’ll just have to see, but I’m not getting my hopes up as every Season 2 episode, so far, has been a disappointment.
Here’s the official synopsis for “Rise of the Villains: The Last Laugh”:
"Gordon and Bullock track down a nemesis from the past, leading to a standoff between Jerome (guest star Cameron Monaghan) and Gordon. Meanwhile, a magic show at the Gotham Children’s Hospital gala turns into a hostage situation in the all-new “Rise of the Villains: The Last Laugh” episode of GOTHAM."
And, of course, the promo for the episode:
Enjoy this week’s new episode, and check back with us on Tuesday morning for our full recap and review.
Fox’s Gotham airs on Mondays at 8:00PM EST.
