Gotham Preview/Synopsis – S02E06 – “Rise Of The Villains: By Fire”
By Steve Lam
On last week’s “Scarification” episode of Fox’s Gotham, Theo Galavan moved forward with his plans to take over Gotham. He had Penguin recruit the talents of arsonists which ignites (sorry for the pun) a war between the Pike Brothers and Jim’s newly formed Unit Alpha — resulting in the death of Garrett, a rookie cop who was part of the elite team.

We soon discover that the fires were specifically targeted at buildings owned by Wayne Enterprises. Central to these activities was the stealing of a knife owned by the Wayne family. Penguin, with his own agenda of trying to free his mother from the clutches of Theo, did his research into the knife’s importance. Like I said in a previous article, Penguin was not going to take the abduction of his mother sitting down.
After seeking out a woman named Edwige, Penguin learned that the Waynes and the Galavans (formerly the Dumas) had a centuries-old feud. But an impending blood war wasn’t enough for Penguin, he wanted Butch to infiltrate Theo’s organization for the purposes of finding his mother. In order to do this, Butch needed to get trust from Theo. We soon saw how Penguin would create this “trust” — by chopping Butch’s hand off and making Theo think Butch has switched sides due to Penguin’s insanity.
The actual long game for this season seemed to be revealed in the final scenes when Theo was visited by a priest from the Sacred Order of St. Dumas. Their ultimate plan is to redeem the Dumas name and kill the final heir of the Wayne empire — Bruce Wayne.
Here’s the official synopsis for “Rise of the Villains: By Fire”:
"After Bridgit Pike (guest star Michelle Veintimilla) rejoins her brothers, a new spark of courage ignites within her, as she chooses to take control of her future. Meanwhile, Kringle and Nygma’s relationship will take a new step and Penguin and Galavan continue to battle for control of Gotham City’s underworld."
