8. Guardians of the Galaxy

Big props here to the folks at Marvel who put this one together, because it had arguably the toughest sales job of any superhero movie trailer in recent history — and maybe ever. Outside of hardcore comic book fans, the Guardians of the Galaxy were completely unknown, and this band of misfit space heroes had to quickly endear itself to the general public while reinforcing the idea that the movie wasn’t just riding on the coattails of Marvel’s overall success.

It accomplished those goals by creating a tone all its own. What we got from the first theatrical trailer was Indiana Jones in space, albeit one with more comedic elements. We also got a rundown of the entire team, cleverly done so that it wasn’t merely exposition. This was the first time many people saw Rocket Raccoon and Groot, so you know their curiosity had to be piqued.

Then there’s the music. As we know now, Star-Lord’s “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” was an integral part of the film, and Marvel boldly chose to emphasize that fact in the trailer. It could have backfired, but as it turned out, just about everyone was amused and intrigued by this 21st Century appearance of “Hooked on a Feeling.”

Very few superhero movie trailers delivered like this one did in establishing character and tone while giving away very few plot details in the process. Effective? I’d say so.
