The Lasso of Truth

Imagine how brutally honest the world would be if these were mass-produced.  I think our court system would cease to exist.  But alas, the Lasso of Truth only exists in the world of comics and fiction.  Among Wonder Woman’s arsenal, the lasso is probably one of the most used items.  Created by a god, the lasso is imbued with magic and is indestructible.

Did You Know?

  • Creator William Moulton Marston worked on the systolic blood-pressure test when he was a psychology graduate student at Harvard University, later earning a Ph.D. in the field in 1921.  Some think that it was because of his work in creating the foundations for the lie detector that influenced the creation of the Lasso of Truth.  However, it was not.  The creation of the lasso was from Marston’s and his wife, Elizabeth’s, research into emotions.  Therefore, Wonder Woman’s lasso was an allegory for feminine charm and its compliant effect on people.
  • In Post-Crisis stories, the Lasso of Truth was forged by the god Hephaestus from the Golden Girdle of Gaea which was once worn by Antiope, sister of Hippolyta and aunt of Diana.
  • The lasso is so strong that not even Hercules can break it.  However, it can be broken when truth itself is challenged.  And beings who do not abide by reason or logic are also able to break it.
  • When Superman and Captain Marvel (Shazam) were bound by the lasso, they were not able to break it.
  • The lasso is empowered by the Fires of Hestia, and its magic is so strong that even slight contact would compel someone to admit their true intentions.
  • The lasso is infinitely long and can shorten and lengthen depending on the wielder’s needs.
  • In the comics, despite the lasso’s mystical origins, Batman was able to reverse-engineer it and create the Blind of Veils by inverting the original weave.
