Inspiration from The Dark Knight Returns

When The Dark Knight Returns was introduced to readers worldwide, it made people see Batman in a new light.  In a way, it wasn’t completely revolutionary because it moreso brought the character back to his roots.  The Dark Knight was never camp, but the 1960s television series Batman became ingrained in the public consciousness.  Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne / Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is based on the version seen in The Dark Knight Returns, so it’s only fitting that the film contains various homages to the comic book.

Did You Know?

  • The Dark Knight Returns was a four-issue miniseries that was released from February 1986 to June 1986.  It was written by Frank Miller with pencils by Miller, inks by Klaus Janson, letters by John Costanza, and colors by Lynn Varley.
  • In the story, Bruce Wayne is 55 years old and has retired from being Batman.  When he returns to fight crime, he is confronted by both Gotham City and the US Government.  Superman, in the story, is a government lackey who is given a mission to stop Batman.
  • In the final showdown between Batman and Superman, Batman is seen wearing an exoframe suit that gives him enhanced strength and abilities.
  • The Dark Knight Returns occurs in what is known as The Dark Knight Universe with a former designation of Earth-31.  After the New 52 relaunch by DC Comics, it was unknown if The Dark Knight Universe still exists.  With the advent of Convergence, there is a large possibility that The Dark Knight Universe has come back into existence.  Writer Jeff King confirmed that the new DC Multiverse is now infinite.
