Creating Doomsday
Call me stubborn, but I’m still not convinced that what we saw in the second trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is actually Doomsday. However, the internet, fans, and various media outlets seem to believe so. I think it’s a red herring. If you knew the full history of the character, then this would seem much too soon for him to be introduced. And having him as a side character in this film would not do him justice (pun intended).
Did You Know?
- Doomsday was created by Dan Jurgens, Brett Greeding, Jerry Ordway, Louise Simonson, and Roger Stern.
- Writer/artist Dan Jurgens created Doomsday because he wanted an antagonist who could pose as a real challenge to Superman in a straight out brawl. This contrasted with Superman’s usual foes at that time who had a reliance on technology or intellect, or had some advantageous ability over the Man of Steel.
- Doomsday’s first appearance was a cameo in Superman: Man of Steel #17 (November 1992).
- In many rankings, Doomsday is among the top 100 greatest comic book villains.
- Doomsday’s original name was “The Ultimate.” The name “Doomsday” was given due to Booster Gold describing his encounter with the creature as “the arrival of Doomsday.”
