The Batwing

The Batwing is probably the second most used vehicle in the Dark Knight’s arsenal.  Hey, I’ve been stuck in San Francisco / Bay Area traffic, so I can imagine how bad Gotham City traffic can be.  When you’re saving the world, you don’t have time for red lights and waiting.  You need to rise above that — literally.  In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Batman once again deploys this flying spectacle of state-of-the-art technology.

Did You Know?

  • The Batwing is also known as the Batplane, Batjet, or Batgyro.
  • Batman’s aerial vehicle first appeared in Detective Comics #31 (September 1939) and it was known as the Batgyro.  The Batgyro was later replaced by the Batplane, which made its debut in Batman #1 (Spring 1940).
  • The original Batplane had a machine gun, which the Burton/Keaton Batman (1989) pays homage to in the film’s version of the Batwing.
  • In live-action, the only times the Batwing has ever appeared was in Batman (1989), Batman Forever (1995), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), where it was simply referred to as The Bat.
