Creating Batman

If you’re up to no good and in a dark alley, the last thing you want to hear is “I am vengeance … I am the night … I am Batman!”  On the fateful night that his loving parents were murdered, a fire was ignited in Bruce Wayne which tempered him into one of the greatest heroes in the world.  Though human, his commitment to physical and mental excellence brings his status to superhuman levels.

Did You Know?

  • Batman was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane.  Due to Superman’s success, National Comics sought out more superheroes for its publication.
  • Bob Kane created “The Bat-Man” and gave the character red tights, no gloves or gauntlets, a small domino mask, and two stiff bat wings.  Bill Finger suggested that the character should have a cowl, cape, and gloves.  The bat-wing cape was suggested by Bob Kane, who was inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings of an ornithopter.
  • Bill Finger created Batman’s secret identity — Bruce Wayne.  The name “Bruce Wayne” came from the combination of Robert Bruce — a Scottish patriot and Chief of the Knights Templar — and Mad Anthony Wayne.
  • Batman made his first appearance in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939).
  • Batman’s overall look was inspired by 1930s pop culture, especially from the sources of pulp fiction, comic strips, newspaper headlines, and details from Bob Kane’s own life.
  • During Batman’s initial appearances, the character used a gun and killed criminals with little remorse.  He would later evolve into the Batman fans are now familiar with: someone who would never kill or use a firearm.
