Creating Wonder Woman

Her beauty and grace are only equaled by her strength and wisdom.  Princess Diana of Themyscira — better known as Wonder Woman — was imbued with all the greatest gifts and qualities of the gods and goddesses.  However, what makes her stand out is her unwavering love for humanity and her commitment to truth and goodness.

  • Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston.
  • William Moulton Marston was hired as an educational consultant for National Periodicals and All-American Publications (both of which would later merge to form DC Comics), Marston was urged to create his own superhero.  His wife, Elizabeth, suggested that it should be a female.
  • Elizabeth Marston, William Moulton Marston’s wife, became the model for Wonder Woman — someone William thought was the epitome of the modern liberated woman.  Inspiration for the character also came from Olive Byrne, a woman who had a polyamorous relationship with the Marstons.
  • Wonder Woman made her first appearance in All Star Comics #8 (December 1941).
  • Marston also created the systolic-blood-pressure-measuring apparatus which was key to the development of the polygraph, more commonly known as a lie detector.  Marston believed that women were more honest than men and worked more efficiently.  He also believed that women should rule the world.
