- Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston.
- William Moulton Marston was hired as an educational consultant for National Periodicals and All-American Publications (both of which would later merge to form DC Comics), Marston was urged to create his own superhero. His wife, Elizabeth, suggested that it should be a female.
- Elizabeth Marston, William Moulton Marston’s wife, became the model for Wonder Woman — someone William thought was the epitome of the modern liberated woman. Inspiration for the character also came from Olive Byrne, a woman who had a polyamorous relationship with the Marstons.
- Wonder Woman made her first appearance in All Star Comics #8 (December 1941).
- Marston also created the systolic-blood-pressure-measuring apparatus which was key to the development of the polygraph, more commonly known as a lie detector. Marston believed that women were more honest than men and worked more efficiently. He also believed that women should rule the world.
