The Unbelievable Gwenpool #1 Smashes The Fourth Wall This April

A lot of times, it seems like Marvel just picks the adjectives to stick in front of its comic book titles because they sound cool. Spider-Man is amazing, Thor is certainly mighty, and Iron Man sometimes does really seem invincible. But The Unbelievable Gwenpool #1 might be the most fitting of all, because it really is hard to believe she’s getting her own series in April.

Please don’t take that as a dis to the character at all. It’s simply an acknowledgement of the fact that what started out as a joke (albeit one that led to some really cool cosplay) and a solo appearance in Gwenpool Holiday Special has become a real thing. The same team that brought you the Gwenpool story in that issue, writer Christopher Hastings and artist Gurihiru, are joining forces again for her solo adventures.

The premise is also pretty wild. Deadpool might break the fourth wall, but Gwenpool looks set to smash it down with a wrecking ball. Check out Marvel’s description of the series’ high concept:

"Gwen Poole used to be a comic book reader just like you…until one day she woke up INSIDE the Marvel Universe! Now the characters she read about are all real! But they can’t be really real, right? This must all be fake, or a dream or something right? You know what that means – NO CONSEQUENCES! First order of business, get a costume and start fighting crime. Why? Because that’s what everyone who has a solo series does!"

Get it? Gwen Poole, indeed.

Not believing what’s happening is real could be bad, though. I’m no psychologist, but I think she might be suffering from some kind of dissociative disorder.

“The series is a lot about her believing she’s in a fictional world with no consequences,”  Hastings said to Entertainment Weekly. “She’s seen everyone come back to life at some point, and it sort of seems like she’s living in a video game. And then the book is going to be the universe fighting back at that. Like, ‘you can’t really get away with everything’ is kind of the struggle there.”

Sounds like fun, regardless. Look for The Unbelievable Gwenpool #1 wherever you get your new comics in April. And yes, I’m pretty sure at least the book itself will be real. Probably.
