Fox Is Open To A Gotham Spin-off

Gotham could get its very own spin-off in the future

Comic books shows are incredibly hot right now. What’s even hotter? Spin-offs of those comic book shows! Agents Of Shield has a spin-off in development and Arrow has spun off it’s own universe of shows and may be getting more in the future. So what about Gotham? Though it might seem like an odd choice given it’s technically a prequel, could we see a spin-off down the line somewhere?

FOX Chairman and CEO Gary Newman said a the 2016 winter Television Critics Association press tour that Fox was definitely open to the idea, but ultimately a spin-off would need approval from DC.

"We’re really happy with the creative on Gotham this year,” he said. “We thought the Rise of the Villains has been great, and it feels like a world that has many, many stories to tell. We haven’t had any conversations with Warners about whether or not they’d want to do a spinoff series. I think that would be an issue for DC. It isn’t quite clear to me that they’d be ready to do that, but it’s a good idea."

So what would a Gotham spin-off be? I could foresee a sort of Dexter or Hannibal-esque spin-off for Edward Nygma. But honestly, the most obvious and probably best idea would be something based on Batman: Year One. Showing Batman in his very first year/early career. As Batman on the big screen is the older, more experienced Batman, a younger, more idealistic version on TV might be a pretty good thing to check out, and keep Batman present in everyone’s mind in-between films. Ideally, this could be something that Gotham build to and then after Gotham’s eventual season finale, we just go right into a Batman spin-off show the following season.
