Suicide Squad director David Ayer discusses what it was like with Jared Leto on set

If you’ve been following stories of Jared Leto while he was filming Suicide Squad, you know that he fully dived into the role. He sent odd gifts to his castmates, Will Smith claims he’s never actually met the real Jared Leto, some actors were intimidated to even approach him. Suicide Squad director David Ayer confirmed these stories in a recent interview, saying that how Leto acted unnerved everyone, but led to a great performance.

"I love helping actors find what methodology works best for them. It’s like tailoring a suit — it’s not one size fits all. But it really made an event when he would show up on set. There was almost a pageantry to him, which did translate into the character and the power on screen he has."

Ayer said Leto’s approach was out of respect for the importance of the role of the Joker, and that this was a time to push the Joker into this “next world, next time, next phase.”

Next: Kevin Smith Gives More Details On Dawn Of Justice League Special

Hopefully we will get more of a sense of that when we see the first official Suicide Squad trailer tonight on the CW specials DC Films Presents Dawn Of The Justice League, which will also feature new Batman v Superman footage and the first Wonder Woman footage. I think the sizzle reel footage that leaked from last year’s San Diego Comic Con showed potential, but we only got a glimpse. Be sure to turn into the CW tonight for hopefully an even better look at the Suicide Squad movie, which releases this August.
