Will Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Have 3 New Guardians?
By Nick Tylwalk
Director James Gunn, who’s also writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has been pretty up-front with fans during the process of plotting the sequel, including dropping hints that the team might expand to include more than just the five lovable misfits from the first film. It’s what made us write an article about five characters we’d like to see in the next movie.
Actually, scratch that. We wrote that before Gunn even said anything, because the team’s roster in the comics has expanded and changed any number of times, and more characters means more for Disney to market. It’s just common sense.
Geek.com thinks it knows how many new Guardians we’re going to see and who they are. Citing the ever popular “source close with the production,” here’s who the site says will join up with Star-Lord’s motley crew:
"Peter Quill will be signing some new members onto the roster; he’ll be joined by Yondu, bad girl Nebula, and newcomer Mantis."
Mantis was one of the characters we thought might make the cut, simply because she was a Guardian in the comics and adds another female to the mix (one nearly as adept at kicking butt as Gamora), another unique point of view and her cool empathic and plant-based abilities. She’s being played by Pom Klementieff.

As for the other two, we saw them both in the first movie, though Nebula is generally bad news and probably worth someone (Rocket, maybe?) keeping an eye on if she’s going to hang with the team. In the comics, Yondu was a member of the original, 31st century Guardians of the Galaxy from an alternate timeline, but the current version is more in line with the pirate leader portrayed by Michael Rooker on the big screen. Sam Humphries is expanding on the past history between Star-Lord and Yondu in the ongoing Star-Lord comic book series, and it will be interesting to see how much of that makes its way into Vol. 2.
It’s possible none of it will, considering the way Gunn has mentioned some things that will be different from the source material, including the identity of Star-Lord’s father, which is expected to be a major plot point in the new movie. At least he’ll apparently have plenty of new help discovering the truth. We’ll find out when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 lands in theaters on May 5, 2017.
