Gotham: Jada Pinkett Smith Returning For Multiple Episodes As Fish Mooney
By Nick Tylwalk
Even though Jada Pinkett Smith was one of the highlights of Gotham Season 1 playing Fish Mooney, a character created specifically for the series, she didn’t seem all that fazed by the idea that Fish might be gone once the show’s freshman campaign was complete. When last we saw Mooney alive, she was being pushed into the ocean by the Penguin, but we’ve since glimpsed her body at Indian Hill, leaving the door open that she might return somehow.
Consider that door kicked all the way open at this point. TVLine broke the exclusive news today that Smith was returning to Gotham for multiple episodes, a report that was later confirmed by a Fox representative. There are no details yet as to how she might come back, or even whether she’ll be fully back among the living or featured in flashbacks of some sort.
Interestingly, the comments section on that TVLine article reveal the fairly deep rift among Gotham fans when it comes to Mooney. Some fans really enjoyed her, while plenty of others disliked the character intensely and were critical of the way her storyline didn’t seem to mesh very well with most of what was going on in the series.

It will be interesting to see how Mooney fits in with the wilder, less grounded Season 2 landscape, but if she’s been brought back to life by some Hugo Strange super-science, we’d say she won’t seem out of place at all. Gotham returns for the second half of Season 2, now with more Fish, on Monday, February 29.
