Get Ready For a Deadpool Commercial Blitz On Monday
By Nick Tylwalk
If you’re planning on watching shows on MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, Logo or Spike on Monday night, there’s a good chance you’re going to see some ads for Deadpool. Depending on the show, we can go a step further and guarantee it.
As part of its nonstop marketing blitz for Deadpool, 20th Century Fox has purchased all of the ad inventory for eight different programs spread across five different Viacom channels on February 6. According to The Wrap, those shows will air nothing but custom Deadpool spots, a fact you might already realize since the networks involved have already begun airing teasers advising viewers that the Merc With a Mouth is on his way Monday.
The choice of shows is interesting as well, considering Deadpool is an R-rated superhero flick. Here’s the list:
- Comedy Central – Tosh.0, Workaholics and @Midnight
- Logo – Golden Girls
- MTV – Teen Mom and Ridiculousness
- Spike – Cops
- VH1 – Love & Hip-Hop
By the way, Golden Girls is not a typo. Deadpool supposedly follows that show on Instagram in the movie, though how much crossover there is between the demographic anxious for the film and the audience for old episodes of Golden Girls remains to be seen.
(Disclosure: I’ve been known to watch some Golden Girls, though not on Logo.)
Not everyone is crazy about the tactics Fox is using to promote Deadpool, with Gizmodo declaring that “The Deadpool Movie Marketing Is Out of Control” — though the actual piece suggests it is only on the verge of becoming annoying. Clearly, this is a YMMV type of situation, but at least if Deadpool flops, Fox execs can honestly say to themselves that they left no stone unturned trying to make it work.

There is an actual movie at the end of all of these marketing gimmicks too, and it’s due in theaters on February 12. Something tells me, though, you might have heard that once or twice already.
