Christos Gage discusses his work on the Dr. Pepper Batman v Superman prequel comics!

Writer Christos Gage took some time to talk about the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice prequel comics with Maurice Mitchell of the Superman About.com page.  The comics can be accessed by scanning Dr. Pepper products with the “Blippar” phone app, but Batman News has also done us all a favor by compiling the five chapters onto one convenient page.  Written by Gage and penciled by Joe Bennett, each chapter focuses on a different character from the upcoming film: Batman, Lois Lane, Senator Finch, Superman, and Lex Luthor.

One of the highlights of the interview with Gage is what he had to say about the experience of working with such iconic characters as the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel:

"It’s great! One of my very first projects in comics was an arc on Legends of the Dark Knight (#201-203).  It took me longer to get to work on Superman, but one of my favorite things I’ve ever done was the “Flowers For Bizarro” story for the digital-first Adventures of Superman (available in print as Adventures of Superman #9).  There’s a reason these characters are as iconic as they are…you can do a wide variety of types of stories with them.  And I’ll admit, writing characters like Batman and Superman does make you feel legit."

What I loved so much about these prequel comics is that they don’t shy away from spotlighting what makes these versions of the characters who they are.  One concern I’ve heard about the fact that the DC Extended Universe is releasing their team-up films prior to most of their solo films is that when the stakes are at their highest, we won’t know these adaptations of our favorite heroes well enough to care that much about them.  Well, to this point, the prequel comics offer the most in-depth looks at the DCEU versions of Batman, Senator Finch, and Lex Luthor.  Getting a better feel for the DCEU’s characters now serves to enhance the movie-watching experience later.

Batman’s story especially captures the way in which criminals perceive him, as a dark, mythological, increasingly brutal creature of the night.  Meanwhile, the Senator Finch, Superman, and Lex Luthor comics explain the different viewpoints held by the general public regarding Superman’s presence on Earth.  On how much of the Batman v Superman plot Gage was given to help in in scripting his stories, he said: “I was able to read a version of the script that had a number of sections redacted, especially towards the end, but I signed an NDA [Non-Disclosure Agreement] so I can’t really talk about it.”  Well, that’s probably what made these comics feel like they were an integral, thought-out part of the DCEU and not just promotions that were quickly tossed together.  Gage and Co. were even at liberty to have Firefly make his DCEU debut.  Read Mitchell’s full interview with Gage here.  Be sure to keep it locked to Caped Crusades for continuing coverage of Batman v Superman and for all your Batman news!
