Junkie XL Discusses Batman v Superman Score
Junkie XL talks about the work he did scoring Batman v Superman!
Junkie XL, who composed the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice score along with Hans Zimmer, sat down with Brandon Davis of ComicBook.com and talked about their work. Junkie XL, whose real name is Tom Holkenborg, is primarily responsible for Batman’s theme in the movie, 90 seconds of which were released earlier this week.
Holkenborg is following in big footsteps when it comes to scoring Batman films. While I have enjoyed some more than others, I have personally been a fan of every theatrical Batman soundtrack to date. On putting his own stamp on the music of the Dark Knight, Holkenborg said this:
"Now let’s go back to Superman or Batman, Superman… Keeping that in the back of your head, it makes little or no sense to examine what somebody else had done over the last ten or twenty years. Because in fifty years from now, when we’re all dead, somebody else is going to take a stab at Batman vs. Superman. Do you know what I mean? You don’t want that person to say, ‘Oh, let’s look back and see what Hans Zimmer and Tom did there in 2016.’ It’s like, ‘No, he’s going to do his own thing that he feels fits the time or fits at the movie.’ That’s exactly what Hans and I did. We made the movie our own. We observed it. We came up with the best possible solution for that movie in combination with the wonderful Zack Snyder. It’s really what that is.”"
Each of the theatrical Batman scores so far have really stood out as being their own things, so history says that Holkenborg and Zimmer doing what they feel fits the time or fits the movie is the right way to go. The 90 second sample of the Batman suite, “Men Are Still Good”, doesn’t sound like anything I’ve ever heard before. It’s too hard to judge it against previous Batman themes without hearing the whole thing, but I like what has been made available.

The soundtrack goes for sale March 18, but until then, in addition to “Men Are Still Good”, a sample of the track “Their War Here” was released last month, along with the full tracklist. Davis’ full interview with Holkenborg actually won’t be published until Thursday, but all of the segments that are up can be found here. Batman v Superman opens in theaters on March 25, and obviously that’s when you can hear the score in context of the movie. I must add that Holkenborg also mentioned in the interview with Davis that the film is “fantastic”! Be sure to keep it locked to Caped Crusades for continuing coverage of Batman v Superman and for all your Batman news.
