Batman #50 Will Be A Little More Expensive

Issue #50 of Batman will be a little more expensive than usual. Just what do you get for that increased price?

March of 2016 might just be the biggest month ever for Batman in his 77 year existence. Not only is Batman v Superman opening in theaters, kicking off a DC movie slate planned out through at least the next 5 years, but Batman #50 featuring the return of Bruce Wayne as Batman after nearly a year. But if you want to read all about Bruce’s triumphant return to the cape and cowl, it’ll cost a little more than usual.

Batman #50, by by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo and Danny Miki, will be an increase from the usual price of $4.99 to $5.99. Luckily this is not a permanent increase nor is it just because it’s a special issue. Batman #50 also is a bit longer than your average issue, featuring an additional eight-page epilogue written by Scott Snyder, with art by Yanick Paquette.

While I understand the increase in price, I think that was really the wrong way to go here. Batman #50 should’ve offered more and been cheaper than usual. Make it $3.99. DC is clearly hoping for a big boost in sales from Batman v Superman, getting new or lapsed readers back into comics books, and getting them the first issue at a lowered rate would probably be easier to get them to spend a little more on that next issue.

Comic books are expensive hobby, possibly potentially the most expensive hobby if you really want to keep up with everything relevant. I mean there are something like 8 on-going books related  to Batman alone if you count stuff like Harley Quinn, We Are Robin Grayson, Batgirl, etc. If you want to get someone hooked into that, it’s better to start them off at a discount then at a premium IMHO. Batman #50 will be available March 23rd, a mere two days before Batman v Superman is out in theaters on March 25th.
