Batman v Superman: Lex Luthor More Modern & Complex

The Lex Luthor of Batman v Superman is one for a modern audience

We are just 6 weeks away from the biggest superhero throwdown in cinematic history! Of course I’m talking about the kickoff to DC’s own comic book movie universe, Batman v Superman. Aside from arguably a Batman we really haven’t seen on screen before, we also have a drastically different Lex Luthor than we are used to seeing. But as Jesse Eisenberg, who is playing the scheming billionaire villain of Batman v Superman explains, this Luthor is built for a more modern audience.

"The character is in line with what audiences want to see now, which is a more modern, psychologically realistic concept of Lex Luthor,” Eisenberg said. “His motivations are multifaceted; he has a way of using language that’s specific to the way his mind works; he struggles with interesting philosophical dilemmas like that of the individual having too much power, even if that individual is using that power for good. For instance, Superman has so far been using his powers to do some good, but is it safe to have someone like that walking the streets? It’s great that all of this happens in the context of a very exciting superhero movie."

I’m all for re-imaging Lex Luthor, I mean, his best live-action portrayal to date has easily been Gene Hackman, and that was a very comedic take on the villain. But I don’t think his mindset in Batman v Superman is all that original. I mean, that’s what pratically all of Superman’s human enemies think about him, it’s a point brought up just about as often as the question of if Batman does more harm than good in Gotham.  The real question will be whether Eisenberg delivers a compelling performance in Batman v Superman, which we will find out March 25th.
