Rebirth will re-launch nearly all DC titles with new #1 issues, lower prices, will continue legacies

Well, we finally have our details on what exactly Rebirth is, and while DC claims it’s not a reboot, it sure might be confused for one, as Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns laid out the details of this huge event where all but a couple of comics with have new issue #1s in the coming months.

Geoff Johns started with the claim the while he loves the world of DC comics, that there is something missing. And with that he launched into details of the grand ambitious plan that is Rebirth.

It all starts with in May with an 80-page one-shot written by Johns called DC Universe Rebirth. Johns was light one what the details of this one-shot were but said he hoped it would restore a sense of “legacy” to the DC Universe. But of course, you can’t just have one big one-shot to explain everything, so (*takes a deep breath*) Aquaman, Batman, The Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lanterns, Superman, Titans, and Wonder Woman in June, Batgirl & The Birds of Prey, Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps, The Hellblazer, Justice League, Nightwing, and Red Hood and the Outlaws in July, and Batman Beyond, Blue Beetle, Cyborg, Deathstroke, Earth 2, Suicide Squad, Supergirl, Teen Titans, and Trinity will all be getting their own Rebirth specials sometime in the Fall.

With the exception of Action & Detective Comics (which will actually go back to their classic numbering, so they will resume at #957 and #934), every title will start over at number one. But some will simply end or be replaced with a new series.

Some titles will also be changing to twice-monthly books. These are Action Comics, Detecive Comics, Aquaman, Batman, The Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lanterns, Superman, Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps, Justice League, Nightwing, Cyborg, Deathstroke, Harley Quinn, Justice League America, and Suicide Squad. All DCU comics will be priced at $2.99, which is good news for the wallets of comic fans everywhere as comics can be a very expensive hobby, with many titles getting into the $4.99 range.

So what, if any character or continuity changes are we looking at? While Johns wouldn’t get into too many details, he said Rebirth would be focused on reimagining characters and continuing the legacy of the many decades of stories before them. Interpret that however you will. Here is the full list of Re-launches and we will hear more details at this year’s Wondercon on March 26th (same weekend Batman v Superman opens):

You know, they can claim Rebirth isn’t a reboot all they want, but it sure as hell sounds like they are getting as close to the line as possible. It’s good to see series that aren’t necessarily on TV or in movies getting the treatment as it was rumored many of those would be de-emphasized or straight out canceled. Will Rebirth be a huge success for DC? Will Batman v Superman be a boon to it or a detriment? Will the movies and TV shows affect the direction of these new titles? And most importantly will fans be willing to spend their money? Only time will tell.
