Batman v Superman Has Massive Second Week Drop

Batman v Superman’s box office dropped nearly 70% in it’s second week at the box office

Batman v Superman may have defied critical reception at the box office with a huge opening weekend, but the negative general reaction has seemed to really start to take its toll. Facing no new real competition in the theaters this weekend, Batman v Superman took in an estimated $51 million this weekend domestically. That’s a 69% drop from its opening weekend, and ties with X-Men Origins: Wolverine for the biggest second weekend drop of any superhero film ever.

Global numbers aren’t in yet, but China, the same market that made Terminator: Genysis a success and is considered one of the biggest film markets out there, Batman v Superman dropped a whopping 82%. Bascally, Batman v Superman may have been able to crow about its opening weekend, but it’s going to be hard to see this week and most likely weeks onward as anything other than a massive failure for the film. If it is indeed true that Batman v Superman really needs to break a billion dollars globally to be considered a success, that seems a near impossibility now. It might be lucky to break $700 million, which is not a ton more than Man of Steel ended up making.

Love or hate Batman v Superman, this has to been seen as disastrous for DC movies as a whole going forward. A lot of Batman v Superman’s opening weekend was definitely people seeing it regardless of critics, sure, but that isn’t holding true in the second week so clearly a lot of people did not like the movie. Will those people not even bother to show up for Suicide Squad or Wonder Woman or especially Justice League because they were so turned off by Batman v Superman? I think Zack Snyder is locked in on Justice League because Warner Bros. feels they have to get the movie out by next year, but will it be very different from the original vision and will Snyder stay on for part two? It’ll will definitely be interesting to see how the next year or so shakes out for DC films.
