Spider-Man Reboot Movie May Have Its Title

The new film incorporating Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe may, at last, have an official name other than “untitled Spider-Man reboot.”

More from Spider-Man

When Marvel Studios and Sony Entertainment Pictures struck a deal to share the rights to Spider-Man, thus leading to another reboot after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), one of the bigger questions was what the title of the new film would be. Some fans thought The Spectacular Spider-Man would be the title for the new movie starring Tom Holland and directed by Jon Watts, while one popular rumor was that the new film would be called Spider-Man: The New Avenger, reflecting the web-slinger’s newfound ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Avengers. But, if what the BBC has uncovered holds any weight, the new title for the Spider-Man reboot might be called Spider-Man: Homecoming.

According to the BBC and Empire, Sony Entertainment Pictures filed SpiderManHomecomingTheMovie.com as an official URL designation, and the domain name itself takes one to Sony Picture’s website.  Sony used a similar tactic when it came to the 23rd James Bond 007 movie, Skyfall (2012), as they also registered various URLs such as “skyfallthemovie.com,” “skyfallfilm.com,” and “jamesbondskfall.com.”  It’s possible this may not be the official name for the Spider-Man reboot, as other film studios have also filed domain names for upcoming movies whose titles didn’t match those domain names. However, if Spider-Man: Homecoming is the official title, or just a working one, it may offer some possible clues.

Some websites, such as Collider and Screenrant, suggest the title references an actual story line from the comics entitled “Homecoming.” Beginning with Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #252, “Homecoming,” written by Tom DeFalco and illustrated by Ron Frenz, saw the return of Peter Parker to New York after the events of the original Secret Wars with a brand new costume: the black symbiote suit which, years later, would become his nemesis, Venom. And considering Sony is also reviving their plans for a solo Venom spin-off, one would assume there could be a connection. However, since it’s rumored (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Venom is “set apart and unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie,” and if the Spider-Man reboot is taking inspiration from “Homecoming,” it could be Peter’s new costume is the one he has for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Speaking of which, both Captain America and Iron Man also appear in “Homecoming.” Since this reboot of Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and should the reboot be based off of “Homecoming,” it’s possible the movie could follow suit and have Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. make cameo appearances as Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, as well.

Another possible reason for the “Homecoming” subtitle could be a reference to placing Peter Parker in a high school setting, in which one of the bigger social events of high school year is the annual homecoming event. Thus, the backdrop of the film could be the start of Peter’s sophomore year and one year later after becoming Spider-Man, along with the homecoming festivities such as the big football game, parade, and dance. It certainly would fit with Marvel Studio’s president, Kevin Feige’s, claim that the Spider-Man reboot is akin to a “John Hughes movie.” The subtitle itself also has a symbolic connotation considering it would be the film in which Spider-Man “comes home” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he “belongs.”

Personally, I’m not crazy about the supposed title, and I’m hoping the film won’t actually be called this once it arrives in theaters July 7, 2017.  There’s also the possibility Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t the title for the live-action reboot but the title for the rumored 2018 animated feature from The Lego Movie’s (2014) Phil Lord and Chris Miller instead. We’ll definitely know what’s what in upcoming months ahead.
