A new trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 hit the internet before the game’s release and it packs shocking surprises.

It’s been a long wait, but five years after Marvel’s Spider-Man released for the PS4 and three years after Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales hit shelves, we’re finally getting the next chapter in Insomniac’s epic saga of Marvel heroes.

In just a matter of days (at the time of writing this) Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be available for everyone to play, and to celebrate the occasion PlayStation and Marvel decided to give fans a little surprise.

A new trailer has been published ahead of the game’s release on October 20 and it’s filled with shocking moments and a few reveals. But before we break everything down, you can watch the release trailer right here:

Enter Sandman

First and foremost, a new villain has been revealed as part of the rogues gallery that Peter and Miles will be facing in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. It’s none other than Flint Marko himself, better known as the Sandman. In the trailer, we see how both Spider-Men fight him in his giant form reminiscent of the final battle in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.

A confrontation of such scale most certainly wouldn’t be possible without the power of the current-gen consoles. Maybe that’s the reason why Sandman’s role was relegated to a simple Easter Egg back in Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4.

Well, it looks like someone did open that container holding Marko back.

Sandman is the latest addition to a terrifying group of supervillains that also include Venom, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, The Lizard, Black Cat, The Prowler, Mr. Negative, and Wraith. But even when that list may seem long, Insomniac has asked fans to not spoil anything since the game will have plenty more surprises and we don’t doubt that includes supervillains as well.

Underwater missions?

During the release trailer, we also get a look at what might be an underwater mission featuring Miles Morales. During the 17-second mark, we see how Miles is inside a body of water trying to reach a couple in front of him before a door closes, pushing our hero back and spawning a lot of bubbles in the process. This will most likely be part of an illusion, much like when Peter traversed through a wasteland filled with scorpion tails on Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4. However, it does raise the question: will we be able to control our titular heroes when they are underwater in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?

Insomniac is no stranger to allowing underwater exploration in their video games. In both Ratchet & Clank (2016) and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Appart the main character could use an oxygen mask and dive into lakes and rivers for as long as needed. Besides, during the gameplay reveal we saw Miles trying to fight the Lizard under New York’s East River for a moment before returning to the surface.

Speaking of which, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Peter and Miles needed to traverse through the sewers in their search for the Lizard, allowing for segments where underwater exploration is definitely needed.

Mr. Negative is back

Last, but not least, we have to talk about Mr. Negative’s return. We’ve known for a while Martin Li would play an important role in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. After all, he was the man responsible for the death of Miles’ father while also surviving the events of the first game. However, the latest trailer marks the first time we see the two of them face each other around the 18-second mark. Additionally, it’s also our first look at Mr. Negative back with his powers in Insomniac’s latest title.

It’s just a matter of days before we see if Miles finally gets revenge on the man who orchestrated the death of his father, or if his sense of responsibility will stop him from doing something he’ll later regret.
