WB Not Concerned About Batman v Superman Drop

Warner Bros. seems claims to be looking at the “big picture” when it comes to Batman v Superman

Batman v Superman tore up the box office in it’s very first weekend, having the biggest global comic book movie opening ever. But cracks started to show almost immediately in it’s ability to have a long tail, having a record drop in it’s first Friday-Sunday, and then having a 68% drop off in it’s second weekend, which while not a record, is pretty damn high.

Now granted, even with this news, calling Batman v Superman a flop is probably a stretch. It’s grossed $681 million globally so far, and is still projected to break a billion dollars overall, which is that magic number everyone keeps throwing out there that will make Batman v Superman a success financially if not critically (that ship has sailed). So fans who actually did like the film shouldn’t be worried, and neither is Warner Bros. at this point frankly.

Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein had this to say about Batman v Superman’s box office performance to date:

"We’re not concerned with the drop. No matter how you slice it, to get to $52 million on any given weekend is an enormous accomplishment. We’re most focused on where we are in total. And our global number is huge."

I think at this point WB is just happy they got Batman v Superman out the door and it opened so huge. It would take an almost unthinkable drop in box office for it Warner Bros. to change its tune (although maybe that would happen, who knows). But I think the effect is already being felt in future DC films. Suicide Squad is getting a humor injection, we’ve been promised Justice League will be a lighter movie than Batman v Superman and Aquaman will be a “swashbuckling adventure” so it doesn’t seem like the dour tone of Batman v Superman will linger over the DC movie universe as a whole.
