Batman v Superman Less Profitable Than Man Of Steel?
Batman v Superman isn’t a flop, but far from the success Warner Bros. was looking for
Batman v Superman has pushed past it’s predecssor Man Of Steel, but that was pretty much expected. And while Batman v Superman will probably be the number one movie for a 3rd week in a row, its incredibly sharp box office decline after its enormous opening has led to the prediction that when all is said and done, Batman v Superman will probably end up being less profitable than Man Of Steel.
Simply put, Man Of Steel ended grossing roughing 300 million in profits. Batman v Superman is projected to make about $278 million in profit. That is including box office, merchandise, video release, etc. Granted, analysts have been wrong before (see Deadpool), but they aren’t wrong often in these kind of things, and even a theatrical release of the R-rated director’s cut of Batman v Superman, which has been rumored, won’t move the needle that much. Again, it’s not that Batman v Superman is a flop, but I’m pretty sure Warner Bros. expected adding Batman and Wonder Woman to the mix would easily make it outperform a standalone Superman film, and it does not seem like that is going to happen.
Next: Warner Bros. Releasing Fewer Films Because Of Batman v Superman?
Despite all this, Warner Bros. seems pretty determined to stay the course. Justice League is set to start shooting any day now, with Zack Snyder still on board as director (though maybe Warner Bros. will have a more hands on approach, who knows?) and aside from Suicide Squad having some reshoots, which is a common movie practice anyways, the DC movie train is actually moving full speed ahead with two new untitled movies added to the slate. If there is some kind of direct effect on future films, we might not really see it until the first trailer pops up for Justice League.
