Is Justice League vs. Teen Titans worth checking out?

Justice League vs. Teen Titans is out on DVD and Blu-Ray today! It features the first time the Teen Titans, a team of younger superheroes has been in a DC animated flick (aside from Trouble in Tokyo, but that was an extension of the TV show more than a separate movie). Robin, still not adjusting well to being a team player, is sent off to Titan Tower to become a member of the Teen Titans. But while he is there, a powerful demon named Trigon possesses the Justice League and is trying to take over the Earth!

Sounds pretty exciting, huh? And while Justice League vs. Teen Titans has some exciting moments, it suffers from not really deciding what kind of movie it wants to be until halfway through. The main focus of this story is Robin and Raven, as two characters who bond a little over having very messed up childhoods and not the best parents as role models. But the film doesn’t really to that focus until nearly halfway through the film. The title, Justice League vs. Teen Titans, is misleading at best, because even possessed, there’s barely any fighting between the two teams, and it certainly is not the crux of the film. Much like Batman vs. Robin, there’s barely any “vs.”, and who wanted to see that match-up anyways?

The Justice League also just feels very shoe-horned in here, they are even missing a couple members for absolutely no discernible reason (budget?). And you could’ve lifted them out of the story and lost absolutely nothing. Possibly gaining something be developing the story of the Teen Titans more. But I’m guessing for the more casual audience, putting Justice League on the title will garner more interest than just Teen Titans: Fury of Trigon or whatever it would be otherwise.

The other big problem with Justice League vs. Teen Titans is they seemed to regress Robin’s character development a lot in that this is a universe with continuity now. Through Son Of Batman, Batman vs. Robin and Batman: Bad Blood, Damian Wayne remained surly and kind of defiant but had finally learned things like following orders from the team leader and working with a team and trusting others. Which he seems to have completely forgotten in this movie pretty much for convenience’s sake. He still could’ve been the Robin that we’ve seen grow and change over several movies and bond with Raven, because he’s been where she has and could help her through it, that would’ve worked too.

But the appeal of Justice League vs. Teen Titans is definitely seeing these characters interact with each other. In addition, the action scenes are plenty and well done and it has a nice message about what home and family really means. So overall I would recommend Justice League vs. Teen Titans for a solid rental,  it has a few problems but it is still a fun watch.
