David Ayer On Appealing To Comic & Casual Suicide Squad Fans
David Ayer is making a Suicide Squad that both comic book fans and non-comic fans can enjoy
One of the hardest things for a comic book film to accomplish is trying to satisfy those hardcore fans who love the comic book series and its characters and more casual fans who want to check out the movie but aren’t familiar with the material. It’s an important and delicate balance to maintain in order to make these super expensive movies successful. Batman v Superman definitely left a lot of more casual fans scratching their heads as it expected them to either just know things or fill in blanks with out much to explain them. Will Suicide Squad suffer from the same problems?
David Ayer talked about making Suicide Squad a film fans on both sides of the spectrum can enjoy:
"Well the film has to work on two levels, it’s gotta work for the people that know and love the comics and it’s gotta work for the people that know nothing about the comics, and I think it’s gonna work for both. I dug deep in this and really researched the canon, pulled storylines from a lot of different sources, characters from a lot of different sources, and it all works together really well. But I think for someone that doesn’t know any of it, it works great too. It’s dense, let’s just say it’s really dense. There’s a lot of imagery, there’s a lot of nods, and there’s a lot of Easter Eggs."

Like I said, to be really be a successful comic book film, you have to achieve that incredibly delicate balance where both hardcore and casual fans alike can see and enjoy your film. Luckily it looks like David Ayer has that down for Suicide Squad. We’ll find out for sure when it opens in theaters August 5th.
