The debut of the teaser for Doctor Strange gives fans a taste of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s venture into the realms of magic and the unknown.

Marvel Entertainment has just debuted the teaser for Doctor Strange. The Phase 3 Marvel Cinematic Universe film promises audiences a dark and epic journey into magic and the unknown. What’s interesting to note is that Marvel once again uses the character transformation arc of arrogant to altruistic. Though the footage is short, we get a good idea, from a voice-over, that Stephen Strange is not only a skeptic, but someone who is a bit selfish in the beginning. I wonder who else was like that? I wonder what other fan-favorite character started out as a wealthy, self-centered hedonist? Okay, maybe he’s still wealthy and a hedonist, but he’s definitely made a name for himself by protecting the world.

If Disney/Marvel plays its cards right — again — it will have another Iron Man-like character on its hands, and Benedict Cumberbatch could be the Sorcerer Supreme for the next ten years. With his dead-on American accent and strategically placed graying temples, Cumberbatch seems to feel right at home in the role — so he shouldn’t even fear the golden handcuffs of being in the MCU.

Other highlights of the teaser are our first look at Rachel McAdams as a fellow surgeon and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One. Fans have already noted that the overall teaser feels a bit like The Matrix (1999) blended with Batman Begins (2005) — which is a good thing, as both those movies were blockbuster hits in their day.

However, in true MCU form, the final shot of the teaser is what fans have been waiting for: Doctor Strange walking up the stairs to his Sanctum Sanctorum with his Cloak of Levitation regally swaying and flapping behind him.

Doctor Strange is part of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be released on Friday, November 4, 2016. It will be directed by Scott Derrickson, written by Jon Spaihts and C. Robert Cargill, and star Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange / Doctor Strange, Chitewel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, Rachel McAdams in an undisclosed role as Stephen Strange’s colleague, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West, Mads Mikkelssen as a rival sorcerer, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Amy Landecker and Scott Adkins in undisclosed roles.
