Peyton Reed Talks About The Wasp’s Role In Ant-Man 2

While attending the Captain America: Civil War premiere this past week, Peyton Reed discussed just how important The Wasp will be in the Ant-Man sequel.

Many fans and analysts thought for sure that Marvel’s Ant-Man, the long-gestating film starring the least likely of superheroes, would be the studios first bomb. It didn’t feature a hero as well-known as Iron Man or Thor, wouldn’t feature the same widescreen action or storytelling, and considering the issues Ant-Man had during production, it’s amazing the film was even made.

Instead, the movie grossed almost $520 million worldwide and became a solid hit for Marvel, so much so that they green-lit a sequel almost immediately. Ant-Man will have a prominent role in Captain America: Civil War before heading off to star in Ant-Man and the Wasp, due to hit theaters in July of 2018.

It turns out that the “Wasp” part of the title is going to be a key aspect of the sequel.

More from Movies

While on the red carpet for the premiere of Civil War this past week, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed, who will also be helming the sequel, talked to Entertainment Weekly about how Ant-Man 2 will be a coming out party for Evangeline Lilly’s character, whose debut as The Wasp was only teased in the post-credit scene in the original.

"“Evangeline is an amazing actress. The first movie was really about her coming into her own as a hero, even though we didn’t see her suit up yet. So we’re so excited about now being able to show her fully formed and what she is as a superhero. Her power set, how she fights, and what are the injustices that matter to her that she wants to right. That’s part of the really fun thing of the next movie.”"

That dovetails into why, as many fans have asked, The Wasp doesn’t appear in Civil War, where both the Black Panther and Spider-Man will be making the debuts.

"“It just didn’t make sense for Wasp [to be in Civil War] because there’s so many characters in this movie, and you really want to see her become a hero and really spend time with her. She’s a complicated character and a rich character. We’re really, really having fun writing that.”"

If we’re being honest, this is probably the best way to go. There is just so much going on in Civil War already that it is very close to overload as it is. The cast and crew have even had to reassure fans that yes, this is indeed a Captain America movie, not Avengers 2.5.

Adding Lilly and The Wasp to an already crowded film could and likely would have done her introduction irreparable harm. With such a rich history between the Wasp and Ant-Man, she deserves to have her time in the spotlight.

Plus it goes without saying that if the sequel does well, there should be no reason that a third Ant-Man and the Wasp film won’t be a part of Marvel’s Phase Four plans.

Ant-Man and the Wasp hits the local cineplex on July 6, 2018.
