Can Batman v Superman Crack The Top Ten Superhero Movies?
Batman v Superman has a short but hard road to being a top ten superhero film, but even then it may not be enough thanks to Captain America: Civil War
Batman v Superman, whatever you think of it can claim a lot of records. It has the biggest opening of any superhero film to date, is the top-grossing Superman film of all time, and has beaten out successful superhero films such as the original Iron Man & Captain America: Winter Soldier, currently sitting as the #11 top-grossing superhero film of all time. It’s a successful film, bottom line.
But it’s also got one of the sharpest dropoffs in movie history period, and while it Batman v Superman continues to have amazingly awful drop offs at the box office, it becomes questionable if the film can crack that elite group of the top ten and stay there. In fact, if it can’t crack the top ten, it may fall even a slot or two further. And easily being in the top say 15 superhero films of all time is nothing to sneeze at, but for marketing purposes and probably expectations of how the movie would actually do, I’m sure being able to claim Batman v Superman is one of the top ten films of all time would be so much better.
Right now, Batman v Superman seems like it might just barely crack the top ten even with its rapidly declining box office. But it doesn’t seem like it will stay there if it makes it. Because Captain America: Civil War is coming. And though it features a similar length and a similar theme of beloved heroes fighting against one-another, it’s also tracking singificantly higher than Batman v Superman and early buzz in terms of actual reviews is far more positive. Captain America: Civil War may become the top grossing superhero film of all time. It certainly seems a shoe-in for the top ten, which easily pushes Batman v Superman out of that select group if it even gets there in the first place.

So what does this mean for Batman v Superman and the future of the DCEU? Probably not much beyond what’s already been happening. Justice League is being made into more of a “crowd pleaser”, and nearly every upcoming DC film from Suicide Squad to Aquaman seems to be a more lighthearted affair (even if it might be an overall dark movie) than Batman v Superman was. But I’m sure for at least marketing purposes, everybody involved would love to have claimed Batman v Superman as one of the top ten comic book films of all time, at least for a little while.
