Jared Leto’s Joker

A Look At Jared Leto’s Potential As DC’s biggest villain, The Joker
With the Suicide Squad filmed and ready to be released later this summer the most intriguing part of the film is Jared Leto’s Joker. Leto’s strange antics to stay in character have created a buzz around the film and its cast. Whether the end result of that buzz is negative or positive remains to be seen. Leto went all out for the character from never breaking character to spending extended time with actual psychopaths.
While this may be not entirely new it is something that could be a bit concerning for some DC fans. The Joker is one of the most iconic villains not only in the Batman universe but in all of DC. Already fans (myself included) are hoping to see the Joker featured in the solo Batman film that is in development right now.
While I agree that the Joker needs to be in future Batman and DC films, fans are forgetting one very important detail. That is the fact that the Joker is a very difficult role to pull off in a manner that is believable and pleases the fans. The Joker is a character that requires a sense of humor that no ordinary human being can relate to, all the while keeping the character serious enough to be feared. I believe that Jared Leto can not only succeed at this both of these things, but also be the best Joker we have seen as of yet. Leto has had a long and successful career working in all aspects of entertainment, recently winning an academy award for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. He is known for being not only extremely selective about what films he plays in but very devoted to them even over his own personal well being.
While staying in character for his most recent role as Joker may have made headlines it is nothing new for Jared Leto. He has often remained in character for his roles dedicating himself fully to them and the history of the role. This is not something that is new to the Joker role or an oddity for the actor like most fans seem to think. This is the way that Leto goes about his job and has done so for many successful years. Keeping that in mind and setting aside the hype surrounding the way he went about the role, there is little reason to be concerned about his ability to play the role. Not only that but he has a long track record of being able to pull of difficult parts that are hard to relate to.

The Joker comes under this description perfectly offering him the opportunity to portray one of the favorite villains in the DC universe. Fans should be more concerned not about his ability to play the part but the script itself. The weakness of past DC films has consistently been not the acting or the characters themselves but a weak plot. While the Suicide Squad may not necessarily be a sign of things to come its pending success and story is what all DC fans should be watching.
