The Death of Bizarro! Bizarro comes to his untimely demise, but what’s more interesting about Chapter 20 of Injustice: Gods Among Us is the conflict between Lex Luthor and Superman.

Once again author Brian Buccellato knocked it out the park with Chapter 20 of Injustice: Gods Among Us – Year Five. The creative team of writer Buccellato and illustrator Mike S. Miller have really been delivering in Year Five of this series and Chapter 20, although rather short compared to other chapters, still felt impactful.

The issue begins with the regime searching the globe looking for Bizarro. The only person who knows where Bizarro has gone is Lex Luthor, but he plays coy and goes with the flow not wanting it to be known that he was the one who had given life to Bizarro. Luthor finally alerts the team that he has found Bizarro at the Fortress of Solitude in the midst of a battle with the creature who once killed the Man of Steel, Doomsday, who Luthor is controlling via mind control.

It’s strangely weird seeing the almighty Lex Luthor not reek of the typical arrogance mixed with the brilliance that viewers became used to in the Superman cartoon and the DC Animated Universe of the 90’s and early 2000’s. He’s still brilliant but reading him play a very submissive role to Superman is weird but also welcoming.

The issue continues with Superman arriving at the Fortress of Solitude to intervene in the battle, but Luthor warns him that if Clark gets involved Doomsday may attack him as well. With Bizarro losing the fight to Doomsday, Superman ultimately decides that it’s in the world’s best interest that he play a role in this fight. But Luthor, being the master manipulator that he has always been, sends Doomsday after Superman as well and blames his attack on Clark intervening in the battle.

The second part of the story showed the conniving Luthor DC Comics fans have gotten used to over the years. Luthor has always believed in the betterment of humanity through him and his actions, sending Doomsday after Superman is no different. Buccellato displays effortlessly the dilemma that Luthor is in: attack Clark and save mankind or keep his life? Out of all of the characters that have made and appearance in Year Five, Buccellato has written Luthor the best.

The last part of the issue is Clark being beaten to death by Doomsday and Bizarro. He tries to hold his ground, but it is simply not enough to overcome the two monsters. Flash finally rescues Superman from immanent death. With Superman gone from the battle, Doomsday turns its focus back onto Bizarro where he ultimately kills him. In the wake of Bizarro’s death, Superman took the lifeless body to Luthor’s office and said: “I wanted him alive.”

The Bottom Line: It has been stated before, but Superman has shed his “boy scout,” image in Injustice: Gods Among Us – Year Five and quite frankly, it is terrifying. Superman is one of the most influential individuals in the DC Universe, even when he has been down on his luck, he’s menacing. He’s going to find out about Lex and how he made Doomsday attack him, and he’s responsible for Bizarro being alive. Rest in peace to Lex Luthor in advance.

But Where is Batman?!? Buccellato has done a fantastic job on this series; every issue feels closer to the climax readers have been dying for, and it seems like they are about to get it in the next few chapters.
