Now it has been revealed that the next film in Fox’s X-Men Cinematic Universe has begun production and looks to take the series in a whole new direction.
While doing press for X-Men: Apocalypse, producer Simon Kinberg, the man in charge of all things mutant for Fox, was asked by Collider.com about Wolverine 3 and what was going on with the project. In response, Kinberg dropped a number of very interesting bits of information about the next Wolverine film.
As has been rumored for a while now, Wolverine 3 will be rated R, which after the success of Deadpool should surprise no one. Director James Mangold can now take the gloves off and really give viewers the violent, bloody Wolverine movie fans have wanted to see for years.
In addition, the story takes place in the future and apparently has a western vibe running through it. This should greatly add to the speculation that the plot of Wolverine 3 is based on the “Old Man Logan” storyline by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. While it will be tough to pull off without access to the rest of the Marvel Universe, it is far from impossible.
And finally, is a surprise to just about everyone, Wolverine 3 has already begun filming.
Kinberg wets fans appetites even more by simply saying
"“It’s a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies.”"
Fans anticipation for Wolverine 3, which will mark Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Logan, was already sky high before his cameo in Apocalypse was even revealed. Once fans saw that, the hype machine went into overdrive.

While there is no doubt we will see another actor as Wolverine at some point, it will be hard to replicate what Jackman brought to the role. It only seems fitting that he should be able to go out exactly as he wants for this final time as Logan.
Wolverine 3 stars Jackman as well as Boyd Holbrook as the villain in addition to Richard E. Grant and Stephen Merchant. It is set to hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
