Batman v Superman: What Did Frank Miller Think?

Frank Miller gives some brief thoughts on Batman v Superman

Batman v Superman borrows a lot from Frank Miller’s seminal The Dark Knight graphic novel, which presents a world in which an older Batman is an enemy of the government and has to face off against Superman. Of course, Dark Knight builds on the idea that Batman and Superman have been at least colleagues if not friends for decades while Batman v Superman makes them instant enemies. So given that Batman v Superman takes many, many cues from Frank Miller’s most famous work, what does Miller think about the divisive film?

Frank Miller was asked this question at Megacon 2016 in Orlando this past weekend. While he didn’t really specifically comment on the film’s quality itself, he did say not surprisingly  that he was rooting for Batman. The only reason this is noteworthy is because Batman is at least slightly portrayed as somewhat of a villain early on the film, with ruthless tactics and needing to take down Superman even though he hasn’t done anything wrong and you know, saved a lot of people. Frank Miller did specifically comment on Ben Affleck’s performance as Batman in Batman v Superman however:

"I liked it, he’s a good actor. I mean, he’s obviously very, very close to this material and plays it with great affection."

While you might think Miller is towing the company line here (he is currently doing Dark Knight III after all and wants to make more Dark Knight stuff), he has always been someone never afraid to tell what he thinks, even if it’s controversial or offensive, so if he didn’t like Ben Affleck in Batman v Superman, he certainly at best would’ve said nothing about it, and more likely would’ve ranted about how terrible he thought it was. Granted, Ben Affleck’s performance in Batman v Superman has been one of the few widely praised aspects of the movie, but it’s good to hear someone whose work much of the film was based on praise it as well.
