DC’s Rebirth event may be injecting a large dose of optimism into its comic books, but the famed publisher’s video game division is probably still in the depths of murkiness and despair. Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced the sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us—Injustice 2. Along with the announcement, fans got a glimpse of the upcoming video game via its first official trailer. If you thought Injustice: Gods Among Us was dark, wait till you see what’s in store for players:
I’m wondering if the game will come with night-vision goggles. I have to admit that the action looks great, but I too am getting a bit tired of the gloom-and-doom narrative. I understand that DC is still trying to retain its edginess, but it can still accomplishment the same goals by having the Justice League face off against a great evil as a team.
To prove that audiences don’t necessarily want brooding in their stories, all we need to point to is this past spring’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice—a highly anticipated film that promised the epic first ever live-action interaction between the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight. The movie wasn’t a flop, but it also wasn’t a success. Ironically, the plot of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice seemed to be inspired by the events of Injustice: Gods Among Us, which was a hit. However, a video game’s story arc usually doesn’t translate well to the screen.
Injustice 2 could be one of the last titles from DC featuring a dark storyline. If the publisher is truly aiming for an optimistic and hopeful theme to its brand, it’ll need to embrace that sentiment in all its properties. DC doesn’t need to become cheesy or completely kid-friendly. It only needs to remind fans that the reason we love DC is for the greatness of its heroes—that at the end of the day, they’re a shining star … a beacon of hope.
