Batman v Superman’s Box Office Totals

Batman v Superman certainly wasn’t a box office flop, but most certainly did not live up to expectations

Regardless of critics’ opinions, Batman v Superman seemed to take the entire world by storm it’s opening weekend, claiming several box office records like biggest March opening, biggest worldwide opening, etc. Sadly for DC and Warner Bros., it was a pretty steep slide from there on out, with numbers dropping through the basement mere days after it’s release and actually getting way worse the following weekends where realistically it was virtually unchallenged for several weeks, but still fell to a middling comedy that should not have been a challenge for  Batman v Superman’s box office crown in only its third weekend.

So when all is said and done, how much did Batman v Superman take in? Batman v Superman will still end up being one of the top films of the year most likely, with a domestic take of $330 million and a total global take of 872.6  million. Comparatively, Civil War just crossed the $400 million mark domestically and is still running fairly strong for how long it’s been out in theaters and accumulated 1.14 billion globally so far. Batman v Superman currently sits at #5 for top grossing films of 2016, but it definitely might slide further with films like Finding Dory (which already took in $136 million in its opening weekend) and other virtually guaranteed megahits like Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them later in the year. If Suicide Squad ends up outgrossing Batman v Superman, would that be super awkward?

I have definitely seen some defenders of Batman v Superman point out that this is really only the second movie in DC’s movie universe, so compared to really any of Marvel’s earliest films like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, sure it holds up pretty well. But superhero movies have also changed a lot in those years. And you can’t really blame it on superhero fatigue when Deadpool & Civil War did so well and people still seem pretty hyped for Suicide Squad. And let’s also face facts that there’s been a ton of executive changes at Warner Bros. in the last 3 months that scream that nobody was happy with how Batman v Superman turned out. Again, it makes me incredibly curious what a Justice League movie will even be if Zack Snyder is just harangued into making a “crowd-pleaser”, which is what they have claimed it is going to be. Batman v Superman may have officially ended its run in theaters, but the Ultimate Cut, containing 30 minutes of extra footage will be out digitally June 28th and out on Blu-Ray and DVD July 19th.
