Preview: Supergirl: Rebirth
By Brian Thomer
DC Comics provided a first look at their upcoming Supergirl comic book series at their DC All Access panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2016.
The publisher’s Rebirth initiative continues throughout the summer, and the Girl of Steel gets the treatment in Supergirl: Rebirth #1. The one-shot issue is in comic shops everywhere on August 17, 2016 and is written by Steve Orlando (Midnighter, Virgil) and features artists Emmanuela Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy, and Michael Atiyeh.

The post-Rebirth DC Universe finds Kara Danvers without her powers (though, from the preview, that clearly doesn’t last long) and joining the Department of Extranormal Operations (D.E.O.) in an effort to restore them.
And, if all of that is not enough, Supergirl comes face-to-face with a visitor from her home planet—the Kryptonian werewolf Lar-On. That’s right, people, a Kryptonian … Werewolf. Not much sounds cooler than a Kryptonian werewolf. Although, let’s hope the preview does not show the character’s final look, as a wolf-man with tribal tattoos does not come close to living up to the potential of a Kryptonian werewolf. Okay, that’s the last time it gets mentioned.
The preview does show a character matching the description of noted D.E.O. Agent Cameron Chase and, considering the character appeared in the first season of the Supergirl TV series, there is a strong likelihood that Chase will become a supporting cast member of the comic book series. She was previously seen in the New 52 DC Universe in the Batwoman title.
Following up on the heels of the Rebirth one-shot is the launch of the ongoing Supergirl series on September 7, 2016. The debut issue is written by series writer Steve Orlando with art by Brian Ching and Michael Atiyeh. The series hearkens back to the heyday of the ’90s with the “Reign of the Cyborg Superman” storyline beginning in Supergirl #1. Only, this time around, Cyborg Superman is actually Kara’s father (and, well, Superman’s uncle).
The Supergirl series will then continue on a monthly basis, thereafter. DC Comics’ Rebirth titles have been selling briskly at comic retailers, so be sure to pre-order both Supergirl: Rebirth #1, as well as the ongoing series that starts with Supergirl #1 which will be in stores August 17, 2016 and September 7, 2016, respectively.
