Vulture has been confirmed as the main villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Here’s all you need to know about one of Spidey’s oldest villains!

It was confirmed at San Diego Comic Con last weekend that Vulture will, in fact, be the main villain in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming film that comes out in July of 2017. So far, the details of what we know about the Vulture in the movie are limited, but luckily, Vulture is one of the oldest villains in Spider-Man’s universe, so we have a lot to draw from.

Homecoming will be the first time Vulture has made an appearance in a Spider-Man film, but he’s been a mainstay in the comics essentially ever since Spider-Man has been around. Here is what we know about Vulture in the upcoming film and what we know based on the comics as well.

Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming

So far, all we know about Vulture in Homecoming is that he will be played by Michael Keaton and will have a more tech-heavy origin this time around.

In an interview after their Comic Con panel, director Jon Watts stated that they went with a tech-based costume rather than something more organic in order to separate this adaptation of Spider-Man with anything that had been previously done on screen. The most recent film adaptation of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise focused more on nature and organic origins for their villains, something Watts and his crew want to differentiate from in order to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe better.

Other than that and the concept art that was revealed at Comic Con, we don’t know a great deal about Homecoming’s Vulture just yet.

Vulture in the Spider-Man Comics

The original Vulture made his debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #2 and was the second villain Spider-Man ever fought, coming after Chameleon in the first issue. The first person to don the Vulture alter-ego was Adrian Toomes, an electronics engineer who was from Staten Island.

Toomes worked with Gregory Bestman, with Bestman handling the finances of the business and Toomes inventing the products. Toomes had created a flight harness and was eager to share his results with Bestman, but Toomes found Bestman’s office empty when he rushed inside. While in his office, Toomes discovered Bestman had secretly been embezzling funds and that he had no legal recourse against Bestman. Which meant Toomes was out of a job.

Because of this, Toomes went on a rampage and wrecked the business, discovering in the process that his flight harness gave him super strength as well. He then donned the name “Vulture” and decided to turn to a life of crime after his business world fell to shambles.

Although Vulture is somewhat older, he’s still a skilled fighter, especially when wearing his harness. He’s also very intelligent and cunning, using his creative skill to invent other weapons and tools to fight Spider-Man.

Vulture has been a part of the Sinister Six, Sinister Twelve, and has a strong friendship with Electro, another one of Spider-Man’s main villains.

One of the main story arcs that pops up with Toomes’s Vulture is that of age and immortality. Many of the stories that involve Toomes in the comics involve him trying to find a way to regain youth , find a way to make himself immortal, or increase his lifespan in some way.

Three other people have been called Vulture in the comics. Ranieor “Blackie” Drago was a cell mate of Toomes and stole the suite from Toomes in prison. Clifton Shallot created his own harness similar to Toomes’s Vulture suit, except that his suit mutated his face and even gave him actual wings for a time. And Jimmy Natale was a mutate vigilante rather than a supervillain, being transformed into a mutant vulture creature by a biochemist.

It’s likely the Vulture we’ll see in Homecoming will be the Adrian Toomes version of the supervillain, although Watts and his team could certainly create their own character or take a different route.

Vulture is one of Spider-Man’s oldest and most well-known villains. Despite this, he has yet to appear in a Spider-Man film. It’s about time that changes.
