Suicide Squad Reviews Indicate Another DC Disappointment

Suicide Squad reviews show Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Viola Davis as standouts, but still a disappointing film

We will not be seeing Suicide Squad until this weekend (most likely early Friday) much like the rest of the general public. But many critics have already seen the film, and the initial response is well… well it’s better than Batman v Superman I think, but not by much.

The Chicago Tribune notes, as many do, that actors Will Smith as Deadshot & Margot Robbie are standouts, but it’s an overly stuffed film with a bad script and a lame villain.

USA Today is actually really positive on the film, giving it 3 & 1/2 stars out of four. But also describes it as “Dirty Dozen For The Hot Topic Generation”, which actually kind of makes me want to wretch. And I don’t even dislike Hot Topic.

US Magazine says Suicide Squad plays more like a series of music videos and flashy montages than a fully fleshed-out movie. Gives high praise to Jared Leto’s Joker, but since he’s barely in the film, he doesn’t add nearly enough to it.

Variety points out that Suicide Squad could’ve been a great anti-hero film, but really it’s just another drab superhero film with underdeveloped subplots and characters.

iO9 calls the movie a chaotic mess, but still praises Robbie & Smith, but says the biggest problem with Leto’s Joker is he’s just so randomly crammed into the film with no real impact he detracts from it.

And The Hollywood Reporter says much like Batman v Superman, misleading trailers might pull in filmgoers opening weekend, but then inevitable disappointment will set in

And that’s just a sampling. Suicide Squad is sitting at 38% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it crawls just above the 40% mark when more review come in. This already makes it on average a much better reviewed film than Batman v Superman at least.

Next: Who Was Cut From Suicide Squad?

Though it seems to be fairing better, at least from early reviews Suicide Squad clearly seems to be a movie that suffers from still being made in the already short-lived Zack Snyder murderverse era of films before Geoff Johns was given the reigns. His fingerprints are apparently all over this film. Hopefully they’ll just be able to salvage something positive out of it for future DC films. Most reviews have praised in particular Smith, Robbie Davis & Leto so at the very least hopefully those four get to be in a better film down the road, be it a sequel or something else. Suicide Squad opens in theaters this Friday August 5th, expect our review that weekend, most likely late Friday.
