Yesterday, the Cadmus publishing plant in Richmond, Virginia, hosted the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), Geppi’s Entertainment Museum in Baltimore, and representatives from Valiant Entertainment to commemorate the millionth issue of X-O Manowar sold in digital and print forms. The actual issue was X-O Manowar #49, the last one before series writer Robert Venditti caps his run with next month’s finale. The copy was removed from the presses and preserved by CGC for display at Baltimore Comic Con 2016, then to join the permanent collection at Geppi’s with other rare and valuable comics.
To further the celebrations, fans who buy or present any copy of X-O Manowar #49 to representatives at the Baltimore Comic Con Valiant Booth (#2008) can have the cover embossed with an official seal (pictured below).
Valiant CEO and Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani attributes this successful run to “the success that comes with a commitment to storytelling” and says the company “had always envisioned X-O Manowar as an epic, long-term, 50-issue story for our signature hero.”
Since pioneering the Valiant relaunch in 2012, the title has followed Aric of Dacia, from his origin as a Visigoth ruler kidnapped by the Vine aliens to his return to Earth with a sentient flying suit of armor. His adventures have gone from the best-selling action arcs like Enter: Ninjak and Planet Death to more political thrillers like Exodus and The Kill List. He has crossed into major inter-title storylines like Unity and Armor Hunters. When Venditti signs off next month, he will have written fifty-six issues of this iconic hero.
As reported here, the final issue of this run will have a 50-artist jam cover and will see publication on September 28. This will finish the Long Live The King arc, pitting Aric against ancient death gods The Torment. Venditti’s final art team will be Joe Bennett (from DC’s 52) and Roberto De La Torre (from Marvel’s Daredevil), but the issue will also feature guest appearances from creators like Cary Nord, Doug Braithwaite, Diego Bernard, Rafa Sandoval, Robert Gill, Jody Houser, Javier Pulido, Matt Kindt, Tomas Giorello, and Philip Tan. Like each previous issue in the Long Live The King arc, this will also come bagged with one of 50 exclusive micro-prints of X-O Manowar.
