Will Thor: Ragnarok Be The Most Unique Phase Three MCU Film?
The remaining Phase Three films in the MCU are a diverse set of movies. But Thor: Ragnarok could be the most unique of them all.
Both Thor films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are two of the lowest rated movies in the Marvel franchise. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the original Thor scored just 77% on the site from critics. Thor: The Dark World, meanwhile, got the lowest rating of any film in the MCU, getting just a 66% by critics.
But what if I told you that the third Thor film could be the most unique offering of the remaining Phase Three films?
The Rest of Phase Three
So far, Captain America: Civil War has been the only Phase Three movie in the MCU to hit theaters. Nine more Marvel films are expected to come out between now and the end of 2019. Thor: Ragnarok will be the fourth of those films, and it’s expected to be released in early November of 2017.

Out of the remaining nine MCU films set to come out over the next three-plus years, Thor: Ragnarok has the potential to be the most unique movie in the timeline over that span. That’s not to say it will be the highest-rated or considered “the best.” However, it has a chance to be the most creative and fresh in the remaining set of films.
Let’s take a look at what the upcoming Phase Three movies offer. There will be four “origin” stories (or at least four movies that will feature a character that hasn’t had a standalone film yet), three sequels (including Ragnarok), and two more Avengers films.
And Ragnarok is already looking like nothing we’ve ever seen before in the MCU.
What Sets Ragnarok Apart
Sure, we’ve seen fighting between the heroes of the Marvel universe. We got that in Civil War earlier this year. We’ve seen scenes on other worlds in the previous Thor movies and in Guardians of the Galaxy. However, it’s more than just that for Ragnarok.
We’ve been teased with the Planet Hulk story line, gladiator-style battles, and epic monsters like The Fenris Wolf so far for Ragnarok. Aside from whatever Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will offer, Ragnarok promises to have more unique content in it than most of the upcoming Phase Three movies.
Because the previous Thor films haven’t scored well critically, the expectations for Thor: Ragnarok may not be high. They certainly don’t seem as high as the expectations for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, or even Black Panther. But with all that Ragnarok can offer, it should be one of the most unique Phase Three films.
Unlike Guardians, the Thor movies take place not only on other worlds and planes of existence, but also on earth. And Ragnarok will likely continue that pattern if photos from the set are to be believed.
Thor: Ragnarok won’t be your run-of-the-mill super hero movie. We may not know much about the film just yet. What we do know, however, promises some amazing action and truly intriguing story lines. It could be the most unique Phase Three film in the MCU.
Plus, it will have Jeff Goldblum in it. That should be enough to make it unique.
