The Authority’s Midnighter and Apollo finally get their own co-starring roles with the launch of the Midnighter and Apollo mini-series next month.

More from Comics

DC Comics has provided an advanced preview of Midnighter and Apollo #1, which smashes into comic shops everywhere October 5th. The six issue mini-series continues the tale of Lucas Trent after the critically acclaimed Midnighter series.

The series is written by Steve Orlando (Supergirl and upcoming Justice League of America) with art by Fernando Blanco, colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr. and letters by Josh Reed. Covers will be provided by ACO and Fajardo Jr. Much of the creative team is returning from the Midnighter series, including Orlando, Fajardo Jr. and ACO. The first issue features a variant cover by Howard Porter and Hi-Fi.

Series Is Long Overdue

Apollo and Midnighter have been one of the best couples in comics since their introduction in Wildstorm’s Stormwatch series, which would become the acclaimed The Authority. Fans have wanted to see the duo in their own series, but it has always lost out in favor of a Midnighter solo series. Until now.

When the previous Midnighter series launched, as part of DC’s “DC You” initiative, it seemed like a strange move to break up the couple. They had been together since their introduction in 1998, after all. The publisher now, hopefully, sees the value in keeping them together.

May this mini-series just be the start of their shared presence on comic shelves. “Midnighter and Apollo is the book we need right now, as comics’ most iconic queer couple face down a new enemy and show us that we can never give in to fear, hatred, and evil,” says Orlando.

Story Is Fully Entrenched in the DC Universe

The strongest aspect of Orlando’s Midnighter run was building a credible rogues gallery for the ultra-violent hero within the DCU. The writer pulled in existing villains, such as Prometheus and Multiplex, who complemented the character’s powers and technique. Here, Orlando will again utilize familiar threats, such as Hitman‘s Mawzir and Neron, to re-establish the duo.

Midnighter and Apollo #1 hits comic shops everywhere on October 5th. The final order cutoff date is Monday, September 12th, so readers can still pre-order at their comic shop. Fans can gear up for the series with Midnighter Volume 1: Out, currently available, and Midnighter Volume 2: Hard. The latter volume is in comic shops October 19th, bookstores on October 25th and guest stars the Suicide Squad.
