Highlights from the Legends Of Tomorrow panel from this year’s Dragoncon

There were many, many panels featuring actors and pop culture personalities at this year’s Dragoncon. A good portion of the cast of Legends of Tomorrow were present as featured guests of Dragoncon, and as such their were several panels involving the actors over the weekend. I attended Sunday’s panel as it was the one with the most actors that didn’t conflict with any other panels or interviews I had to attend. Here are some of the highlights:

Hentschel & Renee talked about auditioning for the show, and how they had a scene that they wish had been in the show. It’s where Carter brings Kendra her favorite flowers, but they’ve never met so how does he know they’re her favorite? They joked about Carter being kind of a stalker.

Lotz talked about the difference between Arrow & Legends, mainly that Arrow has a lot of dark material and that Legends is a lot lighter. Lighter characters, more jokes. She felt kind of like an adopted child on Arrow and it felt better to be on Legends from the start.

More from Conventions And Shows

The cast was asked what characters they’d like to see that haven’t appeared in the Arrowverse yet. Crump said outerspace bounty hunter Lobo. Both Lotz & Renee said they just want some more ladies to appear. Which is happening as Vixen and Stargirl are both going to be in season two.

Lotz described coming to SDCC just after she filmed her death scene for Arrow. It was weird because she had to pretend like she was a big part of season 3 when she dies in the first episode. But she appreciates that it was one of the big shockers in the history of the show.

Lotz was asked what she thought about Black Canary getting killed on Arrow. She said it was “a load of bull”. But she also pointed out that there are lots of opportunities for the character to come back. She’d like to see Black Canary meet Black Siren (Black Canary’s evil counterpart from Earth 2 that appeared in The Flash last season).

Hentschel and Crump talked about Savage killing Hawkman so many times. Crump said he enjoyed it more each time. Hentschel joked that it happened so much he was running out of “death faces”.

Lotz said she wasn’t happy about Captain Cold’s “death” (though he’s already confirmed to be a big overall player in the Arrowverse for the coming season) because there was the start of a relationship between her and Snart and she “wanted that ship to sail”.

Crump, who was in this year’s Legend of Tarzan, was asked about difference between movies and TV. Crump said you get more time for a movie. Everything moves much faster in TV. If you didn’t feel a take for a scene went right on a TV show, you might not get a chance to do it again.

Crump was also asked if he’s worried about being typecast as a bad guy. He said no because it’s steady work if you are typecast and he likes playing bad guys.

As Legends of Tommorow is a time-traveling show, the cast on hand at Dragoncon was asked about their favorite time periods so far and where they’d like to see the show go in the future:

Crump’s was the 50s. He liked the aesthetic and that you could see Vandal Savage portrayed in a different way. He’d also love to go back to Savage’s origins, when he was a caveman.

Hentschel said his favorite was the late 40s where they had a young son. He’d like to visit Scotland in Highlander times. “I just want to walk around in a kilt”.

Renee would like to do the 1930s, France and the Jazz era. She really wants Hawkgirl to sing.

Lotz liked the 70s. She feels like that was a time she should have been alive in. She teases going some cool places in season two.

As far as Flashpoint goes, Lotz said she hasn’t seen anything in the scripts that indicate the show is affected by Flashpoint on The Flash. But since Legends of Tomorrow is a time-travel show, it could change a bunch of things.

Heschel said he knew he was going to be killed and brought back, but not how or when.

Crump’s favorite episode was “River of Time”, where Savage is captive on the ship. He called it the “Hannibal Lecter” episode. He got to act with nearly all the cast in one episode. Show more of Vandal’s psychology.

Crump was amazed that he pretty much looked like Vandal Savage. He also mentioned that he thinks TV suits comic adaptations better than films because there is just so much content out there. He still would love to play Vandal Savage in feature film though.

Lotz noted that in the upcoming Flash movie, they are borrowing a lot of the template from the TV show. What Grant Gustin brought to the role of Barry Allen for example. But she sees why they don’t use the same people for the movies. Because then they have to adhere to all the stories and all the rules that have been established.

Crump would really like to see a once a year feature with the cast from all the Arrowverse shows. Not unlike the mega-crossover that is happening this season, but maybe just a one-night TV movie instead of a multi-night crossover. Hentchsel also chimed in saying because TV keeps the actors so busy he doesn’t know when they’d have time to film a starring role in a movie.

Renee said Kendra had a problem working with criminals like Captain Cold & Heatwave. Kendra had a hard time not judging them for their pasts. Could she put those feelings aside for the sake of saving time and space?
