Suicide Squad Ends Box Office Run At Over $745 Million

Suicide Squad might’ve made more than Batman v Superman if not for one thing….

Suicide Squad may have been critically savaged by reviews, but that seemed to hardly affect it’s box office. It was touted as one of the top-grossing films of this past Summer, and was credited by Time Warner for helping the company beat profit expectations and raising their outlook. These are not things anyone said about Batman v Superman.

Suicide Squad ended it’s worldwide run at $745.5 million. It’s domestic take was $325 million, which was only about $5 million short of Batman v Superman’s domestic take. A movie starring Batman and Superman on screen together for the first time should’ve probably greatly outgrossed a movie mostly starring lesser known villains (aside from Joker who is barely in the movie).

Even more impressive is the film’s worldwide take when you consider it did not get released in the super lucrative Chinese film market. Batman v Superman did, and it’s final take was about  873 million. If Suicide Squad had gotten a release in China, I dare say it would’ve most likely surpassed Batman v Superman. It was expected to be a far smaller film, so given that and the overwhelmingly negative reviews, that is a tremendous success for the film and Warner Bros.

I think Suicide Squad was more or less a victim of shifting priorities. After Batman v Superman was so reviled and failed to meet expectations at the box office, they tried to hard pivot this movie to something more akin to whatever Geoff Johns’ vision for DC movies is going forward, and since it was never meant to be that, it really suffered as a result. I did overall enjoy the movie thanks to the performance of several actors, namely Smith, Robbie & Davis. I hope they get to do a follow-up without some last-minute editing by executive mandate and we at least see what that’s like. Suicide Squad releases on Digital HD November 15th and on Blu-Ray and DVD December 13th.
