The Reason It’s Great

The Age of Apocalypse was a massive X-Men crossover event that lasted over a year. The resulting timeline change had repercussions throughout the Marvel universe, but was later retconned as occurring in another universe. However, it stands as one of the most ambitious comic sagas of all time.
Legion, the son of Professor X, travels back in time with the intention of killing Magneto. However, Professor X dies while protecting Magneto which allows the powerful mutant Apocalypse to attack ten years sooner than what was established in the timeline.
As Apocalypse takes control of the planet, every event in the original timeline is changed. Several smaller groups of mutants fight against Apocalypse, and one group is able to send Bishop back in time to prevent Professor X’s death—thereby undoing all the damage.
