Ben Affleck might not direct a Batman movie if he feels it’s not working to his satisfaction

Ben Affleck is Batman for the forseeable future. Despite divided opinions on movies like Batman v Superman, most people are pretty happy about that. So it’s really exciting that Ben Affleck is co-writing and directing a solo Batman film supposedly set to film sometime this year and most likely come out sometime in 2018.

But Affleck has been pretty firm on saying he won’t go forward with the movie until he feels the script is ready. He did say a couple weeks ago that everything is coming together and it’s on track to shoot this Spring. But in a recent interview with the Guardian, Affleck sounds a little less sure about the status of the movie:

"That’s the idea. But it’s not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great I’m not going to do it."

So there’s a lot to unpack here for such a short statement. Firstly, this really isn’t out of line with anything Ben Affleck has said previously. He wants to make an amazing Batman film, and won’t settle for anything less if he’s in the director’s chair. Everybody seems to think this means he’s backing out of directing the movie, but this interview could’ve taken place weeks ago or even over the course of several weeks depending on Affleck’s schedule and availability.

The other conclusion people seem to be leaping to is that if Affleck isn’t making a Batman movie, it isn’t happening. I can assure you that by hook or by crook, there will be a Batman movie because there’s just too much riding on it. Maybe they’ll go with a different director, and that might not even be a bad thing depending on who they got for the job. I hear Joss Whedon would really like to do a Batman movie. The important thing is there’s nothing in this statement that should make anybody panic. If anything it’s just Affleck reaffirming his commitment to making an awesome movie, which we should all be excited about.
