Ridley Scott Would’ve Given Batman v Superman A “Good Story”
Ridley Scott has been offered superhero movies, but doesn’t want to do them and thinks Batman v Superman had no story
Ridley Scott is easily one of the most influential directors still living today. His seminal work on films like Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator just to name a few have a huge influence on modern films. Scott’s track record of late has been a little more uneven. He directed the mess that was Prometheus, but also the highly acclaimed and hugely successful The Martian.
Surely somebody with that good a track record of Ridley Scott’s has been offered the chance to a direct a big superhero flick, right? He sure has, and he has no interest in them:
"Superhero movies are not my kind of thing – that’s why I’ve never really done one.[I’ve been asked] several times, but I can’t believe in the thin, gossamer tight-rope of the non-reality of the situation of the superhero.I’ve done that kind of movie – Blade Runner really is a comic strip when you think about it, it’s a dark story told in an unreal world. You could almost put Batman or Superman in that world, that atmosphere, except I’d have a f**king good story, as opposed to no story!"
But Ridley Scott also expressed concern for cinema in general, saying he thinks it’s “pretty bad” right now:
"I want to keep doing cinema and I hope it doesn’t affect those of us who still keep making smart films. I’m hoping it doesn’t affect me."

I think being worried for cinema in general is just a tad hyperbolic. There were plenty of great movies, smaller and smarter movies this year just like there is pretty much every year. Also Ridley Scott’s statement seems to contradict himself. “I don’t deal in non-reality, but here are these movies about human-looking robots and aliens with acid blood”. I love Alien and Gladiator forever, but Ridley Scott might want to get his foot out of his mouth. And I’m not even defending Batman v Superman, my opinion on that movie is well-known.
