Gotham: Cory Michael Smith Teases Riddler Costume

Cory Michael Smith gives us a brief idea of what Gotham’s version of The Riddler might look like

It’s been a long journey for Edward Nygma on Gotha. He started in season one as a seemingly sweet introverted forensic expert at the NYPD. But there was always a dark side lurking in him, and once it got out, it just grew until he was a full blown homicidal maniac. That seemed to subside a bit in season 3, with him serving as chief of staff for his best friend Mayor Oswald Cobblepot and finding a new love of his life, Isabella. But that sinister side was still there, just lurking under the surface. And when Oswald had Isabella killed, it came roaring back.

Now Edward Nygma is out to destroy his former best friend, emotionally & mentally. And when he’s done, he will come out the fully formed Riddler we know, costume and all. Cory Michael Smith, who plays Edward Nygma on Gotham, gave a bit of info on what to expect the costume to look like when The Riddler truly comes into being:

"[The role] is performative; not in a Jim Carrey way. I want him to be kind of showy. So what we have as the Riddler costume is really classy, and that’s kind of what we wanted. To give you some inside scoop, I do not have a cane yet, but I want one so badly for a few different reasons. I won’t tell you all of them so I don’t spoil anything, but I’m pitching very hard for a cane. Plus, we do have somewhere to go and add some stuff, so maybe in the future, there will be a cane. But I want him to be someone who deserves a fucking cane. He needs to be someone that’s just begging for a cane."

I think Smith has done a tremendous job with Nygma, so it’ll be fun to see him fully-formed into the Riddler on Gotham later this season. The bigger question of course will be if he and Penguin will be able to co-exist in the same town? Find out by watching Gotham Mondays on Fox!
