While on the red carpet at the Academy Awards, Mel Gibson talked about if he will agree to direct the sequel to Suicide Squad.

Suicide Squad. Oscar-award winning film.

No, you did not read that wrong. This past Sunday the DC Extended Universe film about super-villains trying to save the world won an Academy Award for Best Makeup.

Not bad for a movie that had the movie industry divided about whether it was any good or not.

Because while Suicide Squad was pretty far from a darling with the critics, fans seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. Despite getting ravaged by just about everyone, the movie went on to make over $325 million at the domestic box office.

So obviously someone enjoyed it.

And hopefully one of those people was Mel Gibson.

For the past few weeks Gibson’s name has been thrown around a lot as the person Warner Bros. would like to see direct Suicide Squad 2. David Ayer, director of the original, is moving on to the recently announced Gotham City Sirens project with Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn.

Gibson of course is no slouch in the directing department. He won an Oscar for his work on Braveheart and was nominated for another this past Sunday for Hacksaw Ridge. However, Gibson has been vocal with his criticism of the entire superhero genre, so he may seem like an odd choice to helm such a high profile film in the DCEU.

But that doesn’t mean Gibson isn’t interested.

When asked by Entertainment Tonight on the Oscar red carpet about Suicide Squad 2, he said that while no one has signed on the dotted line, the parties are all talking.

"“I don’t know. I just met some guys about story points. It’s not a done deal or anything, but it’s just fun to shoot the bull, you know, when it comes to stories. I love doing it.”"

Gibson agreeing to direct Suicide Squad 2 would be a huge coup for Warner Bros. It would give the film a note of authenticity in the eyes of the critics and would bring a whole new audience to the DCEU. If they can agree on terms and a story, it could be just the shot in the arm the DCEU needs to fix the many, many issues Warner Bros. has been having with their shared universe.

Suicide Squad 2 is tentatively scheduled to be released on November 1, 2019. Keep it here on Bam Smack Pow for more information as it develops.
